From Fame to Amistad: Honoring Legend Debbie Allen

What an unforgettable evening!

Thank you to The Westport Library for including Discovering Amistad in this year’s Booked for the Evening event celebrating the extraordinary Debbie Allen.

Debbie Allen is an undisputed powerhouse. Host Shonda Rhimes called her a "triple, triple, triple threat"—and she truly is. While widely known for her iconic role in Fame, her career as a dancer, actor, director, producer, educator, author, and advocate is unmatched.

Beyond her stage and screen achievements, Debbie was the visionary behind bringing the story of the 1839 Amistad Rebellion to global film audiences. It was her vision and persistence that convinced Steven Spielberg to direct Amistad.

Debbie, we are deeply grateful for your warmth, resilience, and dedication to history. Thank you for your continued friendship with Discovering Amistad. Congratulations on receiving the 2026 Booked for the Evening Award—there is no one more deserving!
